Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 2

Staff and leaders did not listen to information about people who are most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes. This meant people’s care was not tailored in response to this.

Processes were in place to seek information from people, but records did not indicate these had been implemented effectively. We reviewed resident feedback from survey results but these were only linked to the menu. We saw some surveys conducted with people and residents but these had been completed with the support of staff. There was no indication that areas highlighted for improvement had been actioned or were in the home’s service improvement plan.

Care records for people contained limited information on their equality and diversity needs. Most people living at the home were elderly, many of whom were living with dementia. However, communication plans were limited and there was no information on how to involve people in expressing their needs and wishes.

Assessments and care plans linked to people’s interests and activities were poorly completed, or not completed at all. People told us they were bored, and no activities were happening. We found limited opportunities for meaningful activities, particularly for people living with dementia. On our review of activities records, these did not show people were being offered activities and most activities were linked to tasks around personal care such as nail care or brushing hair. There was 1 activity coordinator covering for the 3 units and we observed the activity coordinator supporting people with meals.
