Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were involved in decisions about their daily lives and encouraged to make choices about their care, meals, activities, and routines.
During our inspection, we observed staff supporting people to make choices about their daily lives and maintain their independence. People were able to receive visitors freely, and relatives told us they visited regularly. One person said, “There are a lot of activities that go on here and I have also been taken out a lot.” Another person told us, “They have a lot of activities that go on. I like the bingo.” Relatives also spoke positively about the activities provided. A relative said, “The [activities coordinator] is great, they are so good for the residents and often go that extra mile for them.” Another commented, “[Relative] gets very anxious, but the activities coordinator encourages and gets [relative] to join in whatever is going on.”
People told us they were encouraged to remain as independent as possible. One person said, “I love it here, the carers are kind to me and never rush me. They show me my clothes of a morning and will ask what I would like to wear, I never feel rushed.” Another person told us, “I can go to bed when I want to and get up. I look after myself, but staff are around if I need them.”
The service regularly sought people's views through meetings and discussions. Feedback and suggestions were listened to and considered, with action plans used to address areas for improvement. This helped ensure people remained involved in shaping the service and how support was provided.
