Our view of the service
We carried out this assessment between 29 July 2025 and 08 August 2025. J.C.Michael Group Ltd Basildon is a domiciliary care agency providing personal care to people living in their own homes. The service provides personal care and support for older people, younger adults and children from 4 years to 18 years living with physical or sensory disabilities, mental health conditions and dementia, and people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
Not everyone who used the service received personal care. CQC only inspects where people receive personal care. This is help with tasks related to personal hygiene and eating. Where they do, we also consider any wider social care provided. At the time of our inspection there were 59 people receiving personal care support.
The provider was previously in breach of the legal regulations in relation to safeguarding people from abuse and improper treatment and good governance.
The provider was rated as requires improvement at our previous inspection in August 2023. At this inspection we found the provider had made improvements and was no longer in breach of the regulations. The provider's oversight of key areas such as safeguarding documentation, recruitment records, medicines management and the timing and safety of people's care visits had improved. The registered manager now had robust systems in place to monitor the service, which provided good oversight to monitor and improve outcomes for people and gave a clear oversight of risk.
The provider’s quality assurance system was effective which meant they were able to ensure staff were recruited safely and trained and supervised to provide appropriate support for people. People's medicines were managed safely by trained staff and the management team understood their duty and roles in safeguarding people from the risk of harm or abuse.
We inspected the service against Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture guidance to make judgments about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. We found the provider was meeting the values of right support right care right culture.
The management team and staff understood how to respond to challenges and barriers to care that people might face. People received person centred care delivered by staff who treated them with dignity and respect.
People's relatives told us staff were kind, caring and professional. Staff said they were happy working with J.C.Michael Group Ltd Basildon and felt valued by the management team. There was an open culture where people were able to make changes to their support and give feedback without fear of reprisals. External professionals told us the staff and management team worked closely with them for the benefit of people using the service.
People's experience of this service
People’s relatives told us that care and support was tailored to people’s needs. This meant they had choice and independence in their daily lives in line with the principles of Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture.
We were unable to obtain direct views from people about their experiences; however, we received feedback from people's relatives and external health professionals involved in their care. We also reviewed feedback people had shared with the provider via their quality assurance systems.
People's relatives provided positive feedback about the staff and the support they provided. Their comments included, “Our overall impressions of the care [relative] is receiving from J C Michaels is very good.”
A relative told us about how staff supported their family member. They said, “I feel that my [relative] has received exceptionally good care. My [relative] can be very nervous about transfers but the care workers always make sure they feel safe.”
Relatives said staff were well trained and supported people with their needs and wishes. A relative said, “The care workers are well versed in using the hoist and other equipment and my [relative] feels confident now with them using it.”
An external professional told us, “Staff demonstrate genuine compassion and attentiveness in their interactions.” And “If more care agencies took the same proactive approach as JC Michaels, I am certain that more adults could continue to live independently in the community avoiding safeguarding concerns from communicating so well with professionals and working in a preventative way to keep adults safe.”
