Assessing needs
The judgement for Assessing needs is based on the latest evidence we assessed for the Effective key question.
Delivering evidence-based care and treatment
We looked at 9 patient care records. The information recorded in these records was in line with recognised guidance. We saw evidence the clinicians justified, graded and reported on the radiographs they took. Preventive oral health care was encouraged.
The practice offered intravenous conscious sedation. We reviewed dental records in relation to the provision of sedation. These indicated that vital sign checks were carried out at the required intervals on the patient by the sedationist. Medicines management was not effective. The reversal agent for the sedation medicine was missing from its box, and staff were unable to confirm whether it had been used or where it had gone. In addition, on the day of inspection there was no evidence that the persons providing the sedation had completed the required training. We were later sent evidence of this sedation training.
Staff obtained patients’ consent for treatment in line with legislation and guidance and understood their responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Staff described how they involved patients’ relatives or carers when appropriate and made sure they had enough time to explain treatment options clearly.
The practice had systems for prescribing of medicines in line with current guidance.
Patients were referred to primary and secondary care specialists for treatment the practice did not provide. This included referring patients with suspected cancer under the national faster diagnosis pathways.
