Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 28 July 2025

Our assessment started on 28 July 2025 and finished on 20 August 2025. We carried out our on-site comprehensive assessment on 30 and 31 July 2025 as the service had not been inspected since 2018.

The Berrys Carehome is a residential care home providing accommodation with personal care for up to 3 people. The service provides care to older and younger people and people with a learning disability and autistic people. There were 3 people living at the service at the time of our assessment. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgement about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

We looked at all key questions and all quality statements. The rating at the last assessment was good. This has now changed to requires improvement. The provider was in breach of the legal regulations relating to safe care and treatment, staffing, premises and equipment and good governance.

We found environmental risks including fire safety were not well managed or monitored. Risks to people's safety were not always well documented and updated. There were not sufficient staff arrangements in place to support people effectively. People did not live in an environment which was adequate to meet their needs and was not well maintained. Governance systems needed improving to monitor the quality and safety of the service. The service was not working within the principles of ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ as people’s choices, independence and access to the community were not always guaranteed.

In instances where CQC has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of the service

Updated 28 July 2025

People’s health and safety were not always monitored to ensure they were kept safe. Fire drills were not carried out effectively to ensure people could be safely evacuated in the event of an emergency. Care plans did not always reflect people’s current needs and were difficult to read and understand. There were not always enough staff to enable people to participate in daily activities which were important to them. The premises were not well maintained for people to have a comfortable place to live. Relatives told us they did not always know what was in the person’s plan of care but trusted the staff to care for people well.

People we spoke with expressed they were happy with their care and support and with the staff supporting them. Staff treated people with kindness, dignity and respect. People received their medicines as prescribed. We received positive feedback from relatives.
