Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this inspection the rating has changed to good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. We received positive feedback regarding the kind and caring nature of the staff. One person told us “The staff are very kind to me. Here is the best place that I’ve been.” A relative told us “The staff are very nice and as far as I can tell they are kind to my [family member].” Another relative said “The staff here are wonderful. The manager is a very caring person as are the staff. [Family members] hair and skin is so nice and it’s clear that the staff really care about [family member].”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. Each person who lived in Beechwood were supported in a unique and caring way. Staff clearly knew people well and communicated with people based off there preferred methods. For example, we observed how 1 person was using signs and gestures to communicate, staff clearly understood their needs and interacted with them.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. For example, we saw how people had access to walking aids and equipment to ensure they could safely mobilise around the home.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People were supported by staff to engage in their assessed 1-1 support. We observed people spending time with staff members who clearly knew them well.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff told us they felt well supported by the registered manager. One staff member said “[Registered manager] is absolutely fantastic, he always helps when needed.” Staff were supervised regularly and supported to raise any suggestions or feedback.
