West Town Surgery, 80 High Street, Barton Upon Humber, South Humberside, DN18 5PUIs housed in a grade two listed building in the centre of the town. Parking is not available at the practice but there is free parking near the practice. Consulting and treatment rooms are all on the ground floor. The practice provides services under a APMS contract with the NHS North Lincolnshire to the practice population of 3059, covering patients of all ages.

The proportion of the practice population in the 65 to 74year and 75 plus age group is slightly below the local CCG and England. The proportion of the practice population in the under 18 age group is similar to the local CCG and England average. The practice population is predominantly white British.

The practice scored seven on the deprivation measurement scale, the deprivation scale goes from one to ten, with one being the most deprived. People living in more deprived areas tend to have a greater need for health services.

The provider is registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide the regulated activities Diagnostic and screening procedures, Family planning, Maternity and midwifery services, Surgical procedures and Treatment of disease, disorder or injury.

West Town Surgery is a single-handed GP practice run by one female GP. There is one full-time practice nurse and the practice is supported by regular locum GPs. There is a practice manager, reception manager and a team of administration and dispensary staff.

The practice is a training practice for year three medical students. The surgery is open between 8.00am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday. GP appointments are available between 9.00am - 11.30am and 3.30pm to 5.30 pm. This time is extended if any patients need to be seen urgently. Appointments can be booked up to four weeks in advance.

The practice, along with all other practices in the area have a contractual agreement for the Out of Hours provider to provide OOHs services from 6.30pm on weeknights. This has been agreed with the NHS England area team.

When the practice is closed patients use the NHS 111 service to contact the OOHs provider. Information for patients requiring urgent medical attention out of hours is available in the waiting area and on the practice website.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at West Town Surgery on 4 October 2018 as part of our inspection programme.

At this inspection we found:

  • When safety incidents happened, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
  • There was a focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation. However

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

  • Improve the suitability of some areas of the environment in relation to safety.
  • Review the current systems in place for maintaining records of training completed.
  • Consider the effectiveness of the arrangements for monitoring health and safety at the practice.
  • Introduce documented checks of competency for dispensary staff.
  • Improve the number of carers identified in the practice.
