Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity.

The registered manager told us how they used induction and training to ensure staff started with the right values. They told us how they continued to monitor and assess staff practice on an ongoing basis and discussed issues as part of a person’s supervision. They also added how staff were encouraged to empathise with people they supported and to think about the level of care they would want for one of their own family members.

A person receiving support told us staff were caring, they added, “When I’m having a down day, they are very good at lifting me and listening to me, they are sensitive to my issues and that’s so important to me.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences.

Staff told us about how they supported people as individuals. They said, “I give care to everyone in the same respectful, person-centred way as anyone else and ensure we create a safe, supportive environment for them to live in.” The staff also told us how they ensured people felt accepted and how it was important not to make assumptions about the way people wanted to be cared for.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff told us people were offered a range of choices as part of their day to day routines no matter how small this was. They added, “Choosing the colour of clothing a person wanted to wear or the type of cereals for breakfast was a big achievement for some people”. People were offered a range of activities that included going out or spending time within their homes doing leisurely things they wanted to do such as chatting to people they lived with or watching TV.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. The registered manager told us how they would liaise immediately with people’s GP’s if they had any concerns. Staff told us how they would share information with families and their manager if they were worried about a person’s health or welfare.

Many families we spoke to told us how they were responsible for responding to any health concerns relating to their loved ones who they lived with but told us how the staff would share concerns they had to ensure the person got the best possible care immediately.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff told us how working for Ashton Care Limited was a positive and rewarding experience. A staff member to us how they felt that the provider was able to prioritise both the people supported and the staff team together. Another staff member told us how the provider created and encouraged opportunities for career progression and how the positive attitude of the registered manager helped them to feel motivated in doing their jobs.
