Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 26 August to 10 September 2025. The assessment was a responsive assessment due to concerns received about the service. Ashby Lodge is a residential care home providing support to older people and people living with dementia. The service can accommodate up to 21 people, at the time of our assessment 20 people were living at the service. We found a breach around good governance; we found systems and processes were not established and operated effectively to monitor and improve the quality and safety to the services provided in the carrying on of the registered activity. We found the service did not investigate incidents thoroughly. Staff did not have regular supervisions, meetings or appraisals. During our assessment, documents were not available for us to review. We also found some of the records we requested had been put in place recently, such as safeguarding log, cleaning schedules, some maintenance checks at the service and complaints log. However, these concerns had been identified and the recently appointed registered manager had completed an action plan and started to address the concerns. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Managers made sure staff received training. The provider promoted people’s independence, people were encouraged to be independent and supported with tasks where they needed help to maintain and improve independence. People were offered choice and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

People's experience of this service

All feedback from people and relatives was positive. All told us they felt safe and were getting the care they needed. Care was delivered by staff who were caring, patient and knowledgeable, who treated people as individuals. People praised the activities staff member, and told us they enjoyed activities, and these were well planned. People discussed with us changes in management and people shared positive feedback regarding the new management team. A person told us, “I am happy I came here; they look after me well. Several people described how staff treated them kindly and with patience preserving their privacy and dignity. When people could not directly tell us about their experience, we used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. This showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them.
