Our view of the service

Date of assessment 8 April 2025 to 17 April 2025. Haythorne Place is a care home providing personal and nursing care for up to 120 people, some of whom were living with mental health conditions or dementia. The service comprises of 6 houses and an office building. At the time of our assessment 3 houses were occupied and there were 51 people using the service.

At our last assessment the service was rated requires improvement. We asked the provider to take action to address concerns we raised in relation to governance. At this assessment we found the service had taken appropriate actions to address these issues and were no longer in breach of regulation.

We found the management team were continuing to make positive changes and had worked to improve the service. The nominated individual and management team gave assurances these improvements would continue to be further embedded, to ensure there was a continuous approach to improving care.

People and staff recognised the service had improved. Systems and processes were in place to keep people safe. People received their medicines safely and as prescribed. There had been improvements to ensure risks identified with people's health, medical and care needs had been assessed and documented. The plans we saw reflected people's individual needs. However, we noted some plans would have benefited from clearer guidance on the management of risks.

Infection control systems were in place. However, some areas of the service needed repair or replacement and therefore, could not be effectively cleaned. The provider confirmed there was an ongoing refurbishment plan to address these concerns.

Staff were recruited safely and there were enough of them to keep people safe and to meet their care needs. Staff were receiving appropriate training, which was relevant to their role and people's needs. Staff were supported by the management team and were receiving formal supervisions where they could discuss their on-going development needs.

The management team conducted audits and checks to further ensure the quality and safety of services provided to people. The operation of the quality assurance processes had significantly improved and actions arising from audits were being recorded and progressed.

Our observations and discussions with staff demonstrated how staff knew people well and made sure people were at the centre of the care and support they received. People told us staff were friendly, helpful and competent in their role. Comments included,“Staff do chat when they are helping me, I think they are supportive.” Another person said, “All the staff are friendly really. I haven’t a bad word about any staff.”
