Requires improvement

Updated 26 January 2024

Risk assessments did not always have sufficient detail to ensure staff had the information required to understand and mitigate specific individual risks to people. Not all staff had up to date training to ensure they had the knowledge to mitigate these risks. However, people told us they felt safe and protected from harm. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs and staff had been safely recruited.

Involving people to manage risks

Score: 2

People's risks were not always fully recorded. We found concerns with risk assessments and strategies regarding epilepsy, diabetes, pressure damage to skin and use of electric heaters. The registered manager updated some of the risk assessments after the inspection to mitigate specific risks. However, not all information was detailed enough to ensure staff had the information to keep people safe. Not all staff had up to date training on people's healthcare needs. The registered manager had training organised in the near future to ensure all staff had the knowledge to support people safely. There were sufficient processes to ensure the environment was safe for people. Windows had restrictors, and radiators had covers when appropriate. Fire safety checks were completed and hot water temperatures were checked regularly.

We observed staff supporting people within communal areas. People were treated in a kind, professional manner. Staff knew people well and understood how to support them to manage day to day risks, such as mobility, modified food and support needs.

People or their relatives were involved in care planning and were consulted on their views. One relative told us, "We were involved in the care planning. We are all happy with care." Care plans were made accessible to people and their relatives. People and their relatives told us they felt safe at The Triangle Care Home. One person said, "I feel safe here." A relative told us, "[Person] does feel safe."

Safe and effective staffing

Score: 3

We found sufficient staff were deployed throughout the home to meet people's individual needs. Staff were attentive to people and responded quickly when needed. We observed staff interacting with people and offering regular activities. People appeared relaxed and comfortable in staff presence.

Staff were recruited safely. The provider requested references from previous employment and the employees' Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) status had been checked. The Disclosure and Barring Service carry out a criminal record and barring check on individuals who intend to work with vulnerable adults, to help employers make safer recruitment decisions. Rotas evidenced staffing levels were stable and we were told levels would increase if required. The registered manager had a good oversight of staffing levels and individual people's needs.

People told us they felt there were enough staff on each shift to meet their needs and keep them safe. Quotes included "Staff are quite attentive and come straight away when I used my call bell. Nothing is too much trouble." and, " There does seem to be enough staff, yes. There’s always someone when I need any help."

Staff told us they had enough staff to support people safely. Staff said they had time to sit with people and were not always rushed to complete tasks. Quotes we received from staff included, "We have enough staff here. Especially with our new manager. Things are much better ", "We have enough staff. Sometimes if someone goes sick at the last minute it gets tight but we all pull together as a team and work through", and "All the staff interact with the residents, we have time and it makes our work so enjoyable. "
