Our view of the service

Date of assessment 12 to 14 August 2025. Wavertree Nursing and Care Home is a residential care home with nursing care, registered to provide personal care and accommodation for up to 50 adults. There were 48 people living at the home at the time of this assessment, some of whom were living with dementia. This was an unannounced, focused assessment, prompted by concerns reported to the Care Quality Commission regarding poor personal care, lack of activities, poor communication, environmental issues and poor culture. At the last inspection the rating was good, at this assessment the rating has changed to requires improvement.

We identified 3 breaches of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment, staffing and good governance.

Medicines were not always stored, administered and managed safely. There was no system in place for staff members to raise medication concerns. Staff did not always assess risks to people’s health and safety to mitigate them where identified. Care plans and risk assessments were not always updated in line with the current needs of people to guide staff in how to support people appropriately.

Governance systems and audits were not effective in identifying or addressing areas for improvement. Environmental and fire safety concerns had not been identified by the provider.

Staff were not always recruited safely and had not received all the appropriate training to meet the current needs of people. However, there were sufficient staffing levels within the service to provide safe and effective care and staff had received regular supervisions and appraisals. The provider was open to feedback and had already started to address the concerns raised.

People were treated with kindness, empathy and compassion. Feedback from people and relatives corroborated this and was mainly positive. We observed frequent warm interactions with people and staff treated people with dignity and respect. The provider worked well with other health professionals to support people who confirmed referrals were made in a timely manner.

In instances where the Care Quality Commission has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with people and their relatives about the care provided. People and relatives were positive about the care and support received from the service. However, while people expressed satisfaction with their care, our assessment found elements of care did not meet the expected standards.

People said they felt safe, they liked the food and were well cared for. One person told us, “Yeah I like it here, I feel safe, and the food is nice.” Another person said, “I am happy here.”

Relatives spoke highly of the service and felt involved. They knew how to raise concerns and told us staff treated their loved ones well. One relative said, “It is absolutely fantastic, they can’t

do enough.” Another relative told us, “Staff are always gentle and caring.”
