Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 19 September 2013 and 23 September 2013, checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care and talked with people who use the service. We talked with carers and / or family members and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

We checked staff files of five care staff out of 46 employed at Bluebird Care South Tyneside at the time of the inspection.

We were told by the Manager that at the time of this review all staff supervision was carried out on a regular basis.

Records checked showed that staff had received supervision and an annual appraisal. Both the member of staff and the supervisor signed off these records. Our inspection of staff records for five care workers confirmed that staffing records were kept and they had been signed off and dated. Staff who we spoke to told us they received copies of their supervision notes.

We saw from staff files that staff had completed an induction programme and training in mandatory areas such as medication, manual handling, moving and handling and safeguarding. On the day of our inspection new care staff were attending induction training. We were told by the Manager that all staff were required to complete an induction workbook. Staff we spoke with confirmed that they had received training and accompanied staff on visits when they first started with Bluebird Care South Tyneside.
