Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment, and wellbeing.

People were encouraged to be as independent as they could be. We spoke to one person who told us “I’ve asked for a burger I didn’t want the steak pie. I don’t know how [staff] do it, there are 54 of us and we can all ask. [name] is brilliant. I don’t eat a lot, but I like my choice of food.”

Care plans clearly outlined people’s abilities and areas where support was needed; for example, 1 care plan recorded, “I may need assistance with cutting up meat, but I can say if I do” this ensured people were not over or under supported.

We received and observed mixed feedback regarding activities. People were supported to access the community the activity coordinator supported people to go shopping and out for walks. The manager confirmed that they are restricted with hours as the activity coordinator only works for 25 hours per week, however in that time they organise lots of different activities such as a gentleman’s club. One person told us “On an evening I like a Gin and Tonic. it’s down there at the end of my bed. I don’t have too many, we do have lots of fun here.” Another person said, “we have an entertainer and a person that brings in a petting dog, it’s all good.” however one relative told us “People seem to be just sat for a long time, could do with staff checking in a bit more, not enough going on to ensure people are occupied.

A person told us, “Sometimes they ask me to go to bed at 10 and I’m not ready so I tell them and that is ok, yes I can have a cup of tea anytime but not too many biscuits because I am diabetic” Another person said, “well they know that I like a big pot of coffee every morning. I have it in my room, anything I want I can ask for and I get it it’s great.”
