Independence, choice and control
People were encouraged and supported to stay in touch with family, friends and people who shared the same interests. People enjoyed taking part in activities that were of interest to them. A person said, “Someone from the church comes every week to see me, that’s nice.”
Visitors were welcomed without any restrictions. A relative said, “All the staff from management to domestic staff are all caring, very friendly and welcoming. Everyone is very approachable and nothing seems too much trouble. Whenever I visit, [Name] is always well presented and is treated attentively and sensitively.” Another said, “[Name is] as independent as they can be, staff seem to encourage it.”
Management and staff told us and records confirmed people were involved in the planning of their care. Relatives who visited daily could spend as much of their time with people as they wanted, some had settled into a routine whereby they spent their days together. People chose what they wore, where they spent their time and what to eat. There were activities set up throughout the daytime to cater for all people's abilities and interests.
People took part in activities as a group and where people chose to stay in their rooms, they had one to one time doing activities they enjoyed. There was a culture of people’s visitors being part of the home, and many visitors spent long periods in the home daily.
There were systems in place to ensure people’s visitors were included in people’s lives. Staff were employed to plan and manage activities, and care staff were involved, and this was expected of staff.
