All Inspections

During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this announced on-site inspection on 28 March 2025.

We found the practice had met regulations.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.

Patients were treated with dignity and respect and at the time of our inspection, could access care, support and treatment when required.

Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance and infection control procedures were in place.

The practice had systems to manage risks. Improvements could be made to the systems in place for assessing the risks associated with fire.

The practice is in the London Borough of Southwark and provides NHS orthodontic care and treatment for adults and children.

There was step-free access to the practice and car parking spaces available, including dedicated parking for disabled people, near the practice.

The practice had 5 treatment rooms. Two rooms contained 2 dental chairs making a total of 7 dental chairs at the location. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 31 staff, of which there were 4 orthodontists, 1 dentist, 5 dental nurses, 5 trainee dental nurses, 4 orthodontic therapists, 1 trainee orthodontic therapist, 1 dental hygienist, 4 receptionists, 2 treatment co-ordinators, 1 business manager, 1 human resources administrator and 2 practice managers. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including the principal orthodontist, the head dental nurse, 1 orthodontic therapist, 1 receptionist and 2 practice managers.

During a routine inspection

The four people we spoke with who used the service told us that they were satisfied with the treatment they had received and the way it was provided. "The treatment is very good". "Very impressed with the level of service" and "I have no difficulty getting appointments and the waiting time is ok".

The procedure for consultation and treatment was fully explained including any fees charged both privately and for NHS treatment. People were also told about any risks that might arise from treatments chosen.

People felt treated with dignity, respect and had received consultations and treatment in a way that maintained their privacy.

They did not comment on the infection control systems. They did tell us they thought the practice was kept clean, tidy and they felt safe using the service.

They did not tell us about staffing numbers. They did say "Friendly and professional from the reception through to the orthodontist" and "They explain the reason for the treatment".

They were also aware of the complaints procedure and how to use it.

We saw there was enough information provided in different ways to enable people to understand the treatment being recommended, reason why it was needed and decide if they wanted it.

The records we saw were up to date, fully completed and showed people were receiving the treatment they required in a safe and hygienic environment.

The infection control and cross contamination systems were demonstrated to us. These followed national guidance.

There were enough staff on duty and on the rota to meet people's treatment and care needs.

We saw there was a complaints policy and procedure that was accessible to people using the service.
