During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this on-site announced assessment on 13 August 2024.

We found the practice had met regulations.

The practice had systems to manage risk and infection control procedures followed published guidance and there was a culture of continuous improvement.

Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance and were were treated with dignity and respect.

At the time of our assessment, patients could access care, support and treatment when required.

However, some areas of leadership needed strengthening and recruitment procedures did not fully reflect current legislation.

The practice is in Birmingham and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

At the time of our assessment, the dental team included 2 dentists, 3 dental nurses, I trainee dental nurse, 1 dental therapist and 1 receptionist. The practice had 3 treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with 1 dentist, 2 dental nurses and the receptionist.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection of this dental practice in March 2013 we found non-compliance with one outcome area; requirements relating to workers. We found that a more robust system of recruitment and selection was needed to protect people from the risk of unsuitable staff working there. During this inspection we looked to see if improvement had been made and spoke with the dentist / manager and three dental nurses.

We found that improvement had been made and pre-employment checks were completed.

We saw that a new electronic system was in place to record staff details in one place. One staff member told us, "The new system will be much better and more effective allowing us to access staff records more easily."

18 March 2013

During a routine inspection

This dental practice had three treatment rooms and employed one dentist, two dental nurses and one therapist.

During our inspection we spoke with the dentist and two nurses. We looked at the records for four people using the dental practice. We later spoke with one staff member and 20 people, or their relative, using the service.

People we spoke with told us that they gave consent to their care and treatment. One person told us, 'The dentist puts me at ease and explains things to me before any treatment.'

We saw that processes were in place to prevent infection. People we spoke with had no concerns about general cleanliness. We were told about the first floor refurbishment to create a separate decontamination room in line with best practice.

Recruitment processes had not been as thorough and safe as they should have been to give assurance that only suitable staff had been employed.

We saw that systems were in place to support staff in their role.

We saw that some processes were in place to monitor quality of service and identify improvements where needed
