Equity in access

Regulations met

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had an action plan to continually improve access for patients.

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. The practice had access to large print and alternative formats of information to support patients with a visual impairment. They had a hearing induction loop to support patients with a hearing impairment. The practice was wheelchair accessible with step-free access to the rear, and a ground floor treatment room. Staff had access to language translation services, including British Sign Language and information was available in other languages as required.

Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care. Staff told us they took time to engage with patients, offering reassurance and helping them feel at ease throughout their visit. The practice benefitted from several longstanding staff members who had developed positive relationships with patients and were familiar with the needs of those who experienced dental anxiety.

Staff told us that dentists took time to explain treatment options and procedures in a way that reflected patients’ individual needs and preferences. Measures were in place to support anxious patients, including the option to wait in a private room if preferred, flexible appointment scheduling, longer appointment times, and access to sedation where appropriate. One member of staff provided an example of offering additional emotional support to a patient during treatment by remaining with them and providing reassurance throughout the procedure. This approach was reflected in patient feedback, with several patients commenting positively on the caring, compassionate, and gentle manner of staff and describing how this helped them feel relaxed and reassured during their appointments.

The environment also promoted patient comfort, with music playing throughout the practice and a drinking water dispenser available in the waiting area.

The practice supported more vulnerable members of society, for example, patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability.

The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on their website, patient information leaflet and social media page.

The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open.

At the time of our inspection, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. The practice offered an out of hours on call service to assist patients with dental emergencies.
