All Inspections

During an assessment under our new approach

We undertook a follow-up on-site inspection on 9 January 2026. This was carried out to review the actions taken by the registered provider to improve the quality of care and to assess whether the practice was meeting legal requirements.

We had previously undertaken an announced inspection of York Road Dental Practice on 8 July 2025. We had found the registered provider was not providing safe and well-led care and was in breach of regulations 12 (Safe care and treatment) and 17 (Good governance) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

During our follow-up inspection, we found the practice had met regulations.

The practice had strengthened its systems for identifying, assessing and mitigating risks. These included areas such as fire and premises safety, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), secure storage of patient care records and the management of medicines and medical emergencies.

There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.

There were improved systems in place to monitor training to ensure appropriate action can be taken quickly when training requirements were not being met.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and the required recruitment documentation, including vaccination records, was available for every member of staff.

The practice is in the London Borough of Barnet and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There was step-free access to the practice and car parking spaces available near the practice.

The practice had 2 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 5 staff, of which there were 2 dentists, 2 dental nurses and 1 trainee dental nurse. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including 2 dentists, 1 dental nurse and 1 trainee dental nurse.

During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this announced on-site inspection on 8 July 2025.

We found the practice had not met all regulations.

The practice did not have effective systems to manage risks, including those associated with fire and the use of hazardous substances.

Recruitment procedures broadly reflected current legislation. Improvements were needed to ensure the practice obtained the relevant Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate for all staff at the point of employment and evidence of staff Hepatitis B vaccination responses, so appropriate control measures can be implemented if necessary.

The practice had some system to monitor staff training enabling timely action if training requirements were not being met. However, improvements were needed to ensure, all staff, including trainees, completed training at a level appropriate to their role.

Infection control procedures were in place. However, improvements were needed to the ongoing oversight of the effectiveness of these procedures.

There was ineffective leadership and a lack of culture of continuous improvement.

Patients were treated with dignity and respect and at the time of our assessment, could access care, support and treatment when required.

Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance.

The practice is in the London Borough of Barnet and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There was step-free access to the practice and car parking spaces available near the practice.

The provider was not complying with 2 regulations. Full details of the regulations the provider was not meeting are within the inspection report.

In instances where CQC has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this inspection.

4 March 2013

During a routine inspection

People were able to discuss treatment, medical history, fees and other matters in the treatment room. This ensured that patient privacy was respected. We spoke with two people and both said that staff treated them with dignity and respect. One person commented, 'I'm always pleased with the treatment I receive.'

People we spoke with were positive about how needs had been assessed, treatment planned and care delivered. One person said, 'You never exactly look forward to a visit to any dentist but I always feel at ease here.'

The provider had a child protection and vulnerable adult protection policy which was reviewed annually. Staff we spoke with demonstrated an understanding of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. They had received safeguarding training and were able to describe possible symptoms of abuse such as personality changes, physical marks and/or dental neglect.

We saw that the reception area, treatment rooms and decontamination room were clean and clutter free. People we spoke with were positive about the cleanliness of the practice. One person referred to levels of cleanliness in the practice as, 'spot on.'

We saw that patient records contained personalised information such as a penicillin or latex allergy. This meant that the provider had accurate records to help identify and manage risks in relation to providing dental care.
