All Inspections

During an assessment under our new approach

We undertook a follow-up off-site inspection on 27 February 2026. This was carried out to review the actions taken by the registered provider to improve the quality of care and to assess whether the practice was meeting legal requirements.

We had previously undertaken an announced on-site inspection of Covent Garden Dental Clinic on 12 May 2025. We had found the registered provider was not providing well-led care and was in breach of regulation 17, good governance of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

During our follow-up inspection, we found the practice had met the regulation.

Risks management had improved at the practice and potential risks were now appropriately assessed and managed.

Recruitment policy reflected current legislation, and we saw evidence to confirm this was now followed when we reviewed recruitment records for new members of staff.

Clinical waste was now disposed of properly and in line with guidance.

Processes were now in place to ensure prescriptions were managed in line with current guidance.

Governance structures were now formalised to improve leadership and oversight.

Covent Garden Dental Clinic is in Covent Garden in the London Borough of Westminster and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

Access to the practice was via a flight of ascending stairs which leads to the reception area, decontamination room and a treatment room. Paid car parking spaces were available near the practice.

The practice had 3 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 4 staff, of which there were 1 dentist, 1 trainee dental nurse, 1 dental hygienist and 1 receptionist. We spoke to the principal dentist during our inspection.

During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this announced on-site inspection on 12 May 2025.

We found the practice had not met all regulations.

Infection control procedures in place kept patients safe.

Patients were treated with dignity and respect and at the time of our inspection, could access care, support and treatment when required.

Not all risks were appropriately assessed and managed.

Recruitment policy reflected current legislation; however, this was not always followed by the provider when recruiting new members of staff.

Clinical waste was not disposed of suitably.

Processes were needed to ensure prescriptions were managed in line with current guidance.

There was a lack of effective governance, leadership and oversight.

We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including 1 dentist, 2 trainee dental nurses and the dental hygienist.

The provider was not complying with 1 regulation. Full details of the regulation the provider was not meeting are within the inspection findings below.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this inspection.

24 October 2013

During a routine inspection

We were not able to speak to people using the service on the day of the inspection. Instead we gathered evidence of people's experiences of the service by reviewing the provider's satisfaction survey results and NHS choices comments from 2013. Overall respondents expressed good satisfaction levels with the service they had received. Where people expressed dissatisfaction with the service on the NHS choices website, we saw the provider had responded to their comments. The principal dentist said that if any issues were identified from people's feedback they would discuss as a practice and implement changes as necessary. This demonstrated that the quality of the provider's service was monitored and that the views of people were sought to identify areas for improvement.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. People's dental needs were assessed before any treatment was planned.

The practice appeared clean and well maintained on the day of the inspection. There were systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection.

Staff received appropriate professional development. We were told that staff received informal appraisals with the principal dentist every three months. The staff member's performance and any issues were discussed.
