During an assessment under our new approach
Date of assessment: 28 May to 04 June 2026. Springhill Care Home is a care home providing accommodation for people who require support with personal care. The home can provide support for up to 116 older people or younger adults, including those living with dementia, mental health, sensory impairment or a physical disability. At the time of this assessment, 96 people were living at the care home.
We assessed all quality domains: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. Medicines were not always managed safely, as prescribed thickening powders were not stored securely. The management team acted promptly following best practice guidance to reduce risk. People participated in decisions about their medicines and were supported to self-administer where appropriate.
People were supported to maintain a healthy diet with sufficient food and drink. Staff worked with all relevant agencies to achieve positive outcomes and ensure smooth transitions between services. Ongoing monitoring of people’s health was in place, with timely engagement of healthcare professionals to promote wellbeing. One person told us, “Doctor and hospital appointments are made by the home and are done if the home is in any doubt about my health.”
Activities played a significant role in supporting people’s wellbeing. Activities were valued and gave people a sense of control and improved their quality of life. They helped people stay active, engaged, and connected with others, which can improve both physical and mental health.
There were enough staff who were appropriately recruited and possessed the necessary skills, qualifications, and experience. People were supported to make informed decisions about their care, including providing consent. Where required, management involved relevant specialists to ensure decisions were made in people’s best interests. Governance and oversight arrangements were effective, with a clear focus on continuous improvement.
The culture at Springhill Care Home was positive and person-centred, with a strong emphasis on promoting dignity. The management team was experienced, skilled, and visible, working alongside staff when needed. One person said, “Management must be good because the home is so good.” One staff member commented, “We feel well supported by senior staff and know we always have someone to speak to.”
There was a range of quality monitoring and auditing. Health and safety checks were routine, with strong fire safety measures in place. The environment was very clean, supported by effective infection control systems.
