Date of assessment: 28 May to 04 June 2026. Springhill Care Home is a care home providing accommodation for people who require support with personal care. The home can provide support for up to 116 older people or younger adults, including those living with dementia, mental health, sensory impairment or a physical disability. At the time of this assessment, 96 people were living at the care home.

We assessed all quality domains: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. Medicines were not always managed safely, as prescribed thickening powders were not stored securely. The management team acted promptly following best practice guidance to reduce risk. People participated in decisions about their medicines and were supported to self-administer where appropriate.

People were supported to maintain a healthy diet with sufficient food and drink. Staff worked with all relevant agencies to achieve positive outcomes and ensure smooth transitions between services. Ongoing monitoring of people’s health was in place, with timely engagement of healthcare professionals to promote wellbeing. One person told us, “Doctor and hospital appointments are made by the home and are done if the home is in any doubt about my health.”

Activities played a significant role in supporting people’s wellbeing. Activities were valued and gave people a sense of control and improved their quality of life. They helped people stay active, engaged, and connected with others, which can improve both physical and mental health.

There were enough staff who were appropriately recruited and possessed the necessary skills, qualifications, and experience. People were supported to make informed decisions about their care, including providing consent. Where required, management involved relevant specialists to ensure decisions were made in people’s best interests. Governance and oversight arrangements were effective, with a clear focus on continuous improvement.

The culture at Springhill Care Home was positive and person-centred, with a strong emphasis on promoting dignity. The management team was experienced, skilled, and visible, working alongside staff when needed. One person said, “Management must be good because the home is so good.” One staff member commented, “We feel well supported by senior staff and know we always have someone to speak to.”

There was a range of quality monitoring and auditing. Health and safety checks were routine, with strong fire safety measures in place. The environment was very clean, supported by effective infection control systems.

People's experience of the service

Updated 13 May 2026

People said they were happy living at Springhill Care Home, and they had all their needs met. One person told us, “For me this is better than home because I have great care all the time. I wouldn't be safe at home. I have to be moved in a hoist, and the staff do it with care and patience.” Relatives also commented on the care and kindness family members received. One relative gave the following written feedback, ‘Dementia brought many challenges, but you met them all with patience understanding good humour and compassion. You celebrated the good days with [family member] and supported her through the difficult ones and treated her with dignity, warmth and genuine affection.’

Observations at lunchtime showed staff were always very encouraging and polite, and nobody was rushed. People told us they were given plenty of opportunities to eat and drink and they enjoyed the food. Feedback included, “The choice of food is lovely and if you don't like what’s on offer the cooks will always make you something else.” And “Oh gosh, the food is good and the cooks do cater for my special dietary needs. I like vegetables and fish, and I get a really good selection.”

People and relatives told us medicines were administered on time. One person told us, “My medication has had to change since I came here, and the staff explained it to me and made sure I got it at the right time.” One relative said, “I am kept updated on [family member’s] medication and any changes that are made. I have never known her to be in pain and it not be dealt with.”

Family and friends were welcomed within the home at any time, day and night. One person told us, “I am very limited by what I can do but the staff make it easy for my husband to be here, which is a great help to me.”

The service supported people to access a variety of activities. We observed people enjoying cheese and wine tasting and saw videos of people and staff participating and enjoying, the ABBA Day where people got dressed up and danced.

Relatives praised the compassionate care and support they and their family members received when supporting people with their end-of-life care. Written feedback included, ‘I would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks for all the care, love and support [family member] received. We couldn’t have asked for better care, and we are proud and thankful that Springhill was her final home.’ And ‘We were deeply touched by staff from other units who called in to see [family member] and gave us their memories which comfort us now.’
