Listening to and involving people

Score: 3

The provider made it easy for people to share feedback and ideas, or raise complaints about their care, treatment and support. Staff involved people in decisions about their care and told them what had changed as a result. For example, the provider held regular relative and resident meeting, where people were free to share any ideas and suggestions about the service. This had resulted in a recent “gardening day”, where relatives joined with their loved ones and staff to do gardening. This had been very successful and enjoyed by people, following feedback this was now going to be a regular event. A relative said, “There was a Gardening Day, and we had flowers to put in and it was a real family day!” Another relative said, “We did receive a questionnaire, and we said, as is true, this place is very good. I do feel that as family member I am very well informed what is going on here.”

Equity in access

Score: 3

The provider made sure that people could access the care, support and treatment they needed when they needed it. One person told us, “I had both eye cataracts done since I have lived at Barton Lodge. The staff helped me with eye drops and to take me to hospital and back both times. Now I only have glasses for reading, even that was organized from here. I must say they do look after all of us well here.”

Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

Staff and leaders actively listened to information about people who are most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes and tailored their care, support and treatment in response to this. Reasonable adjustments were made for people where needed. Staff received training in equality and diversity which supported them to understand people’s differences and how best to support them.

Score: 3

People were supported to plan for important life changes, so they could have enough time to make informed decisions about their future, including at the end of their life. The provider encouraged people to share their end of life wishes and viewed this as a positive contribution to people’s care planning. Care plans were detailed and respectful of peoples wishes.
