At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

Staff always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. A person said, “I am very independent and like my privacy and they respect that.”

Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with respect. People felt staff knew them well. A person said, “I have had the same carer for the past 2 years, she is absolutely brilliant.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure their care, support and treatment met their needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture, unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People and their relatives told us staff took time to speak with people during care visits and communicated effectively. A person said, “They also tidy up, have a cup of tea and a chat.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People and their relatives told us they had choice and their independence was promoted. A person said, “They take me out shopping and to a local café.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern, or distress. People’s records guided staff on when to raise a concern and seek professional advice. Staff noted when a person was needing more support, getting anxious or becoming unwell. They acted immediately and contacted the office. A staff member said, “We would not hesitate to get help if something was needing to be changed with someone’s care.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to deliver person-centred care.

Staff felt supported and had regular team meetings, handovers and supervisions where they could discuss their job roles, and any support needed to help promote a good work/life balance. Managers and staff spoke about the importance of maintaining a cohesive and well supported team.

The management team valued the staff. A person told us staff had received awards for the care they had given.
