During an assessment under our new approach
Maplebrook Care Home provides accommodation for a maximum of 81 people, including people living with dementia, mental health conditions and physical disabilities, requiring personal and nursing care. There were 41 people living at the home when we visited.
This assessment was prompted by information we held about the service. Maplebrook Care Home was registered with CQC on 14 April 2023, and this is the first assessment for this service. The overall rating for Maplebrook Care Home is requires improvement. During this assessment we found 3 breaches of the legal regulations relating to safe care and treatment, staffing and governance.
Accidents and incidents were not always documented, escalated and analysed for understanding, support and learning. Staffing levels, staff training and availability of essential equipment were not always adequate to meet people’s need safely. Care records did not always provide information which accurately reflected people’s needs and risks. Care was not always provided promptly to people. Risks associated with people’s needs were not always identified and acted upon. People’s access to resources and experiences was not always equitable or aligned with their individual needs. People did not always have opportunities to raise matters with leaders. Staff meetings were not taking place on a regular basis to support communication and oversight. Governance systems were not always effective at identifying and acting on risks to people’s safety and wellbeing.
We found a clean, presentable and well-maintained home environment. A safeguarding policy was in place, which staff understood, and people were largely treated with kindness and understanding. Our observations found some staff demonstrated a good awareness of people’s individual needs. People and staff knew how to raise concerns and people told us they were happy with their care. Where required, people had Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) in place, and staff were trained in the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and mostly sought the consent of people when providing them care.
