Our view of the service
Guiseley Manor is registered to provide personal care and nursing care to up to 72 people. At the time of our inspection, the service was supporting 32 people using the service, including people living with dementia.
The inspection took place between 20 March 2025 and 1 April 2025. We visited the service on 20 March 2025 and 26 March 2025 and the medicines inspector visited on 1 April 2025. During this inspection we inspected all quality statements under the key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
Care was delivered in ways that were person-centred and promoted people’s dignity, privacy and human rights. Care staff treated people with kindness and respect.
The service was working within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA), and legal authorisations had been obtained to deprive people of their liberty, where this was deemed necessary to ensure their safety.
Information about people’s needs and risks to their safety was in place. The provider made sure information about people’s needs and risks to their safety was obtained and made available to staff. Risks to people were managed well.
The provider maintained the safety of the environment through regular servicing and maintenance of safety systems and equipment. The environment was clean and hygienic, and staff followed best practice to minimise infection risks at the home.
Medicines were managed well. There was information about how people should receive their medicines which was reviewed at appropriate intervals. The provider worked proactively with others to make sure people received medicines that met their needs, with positive outcomes being achieved for people in relation to their health and wellbeing.
Recruitment arrangements had also been improved and were now more robust. Only suitable staff were employed to work at the service.
People were protected from the risk of abuse. Staff understood their responsibilities to safeguard people and systems were in place to support timely reporting and recording of safeguarding concerns and other safety events and incidents.
The service’s governance and auditing systems enabled the registered manager to have clear oversight of risk and learn from adverse events.
We received mixed feedback regarding the management of the service, with staff members telling us “I do feel supported in my role, I can go to management anytime”, “I think staff culture at work needs to improve, I think staff need to feel more supported and celebrated and thanked for their continued hard work here at Guiseley”, “we all need encouragement as we strive to work hard.” The impact of some staff feeling undervalued could have a negative impact on the atmosphere within the home. This was discussed with the management team at feedback and acknowledged that further work is required.
People's experience of this service
People were happy and said that they felt safe at Guiseley Manor. One person told us, “I have been here for a good few months. I’m really happy here. My daughter and grandchildren are nearby, and I like the staff and get on well with them.” A relative told us “[name of relative] has been here since June 2024. It’s a good, nice place. One of the nicest I think and the best by far that we looked at. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and I think they are good at their jobs. The nursing staff on this floor hasn’t really changed much since [name of relative] got here.” There was a homely, open and inclusive culture at the home. People’s safety was a priority, and staff knew how to keep people safe from abuse or harm. People were comfortable raising any concerns about their safety with staff. People were supported by a staff team who were skilled and experienced and provided care in line with people’s choices and preferences. People were supported to have their say and share their views and concerns. People’s feedback and experiences were used to continually improve the safety and quality of the service.
