Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

Staff treated people with kindness, compassion and respect. People using the service and their relatives told us they had good relationships with staff. Their comments included, “Staff are kind, caring and respectful” and “Staff have a good relationship. They all work together, and they know [person] well.”

Staff spoke about people in a respectful way and told us they enjoyed supporting people.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

Staff treated people as individuals. People and their relatives told us they received personalised care and support. Their comments included, “[Person] gets individualised care. It is a bespoke arrangement” and “Staff help [person] to live as normal life as possible.”

Staff explained how they supported 1 person with their cultural needs. They told us they had spoken with the person’s relatives to understand about food options, music and other aspects of their culture. This helped them to provide individual care to meet these needs.

Managers created detailed care plans. These included information about people’s individual needs. Staff helped develop these by monitoring and reviewing people’s care. Staff demonstrated a good knowledge of the individual people they supported.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff supported people to make choices. People and their relatives confirmed this. Staff supported 1 person to take part in a wide range of leisure and educational activities. People told us staff respected their decisions and involved them in planning their care.

People were able to retain independence and learn new skills when possible and safe to do so. A person commented, “Staff encourage me to maintain my independence.” A relative told us. “Staff support [person] to cook and clean. They involve [them]. They do a lot and always manage this in a safe way.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

Staff responded to people’s immediate needs. People and their relatives told us staff were attentive. They were happy with the support they received. A relative explained how staff had identified changes in a person’s health and had contacted medical professionals.

Managers provided out of hours emergency support. Staff told us there was always a manager available. During a recent incident, managers and off duty staff were quick to give additional help to manage the situation. A relative told us they had responded well and ensured the person being cared for was safe.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider supported staff wellbeing. Staff told us they felt well supported. Their comments included, “The team and managers are great at sharing ideas”, “All managers are very supportive” and “Managers regularly check in and give us advice and debriefs.”

Staff attended regular meetings with each other and managers. They told us these were helpful.

Staff were supported to undertake extra training and qualifications when they wanted.
