Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. A person told us, “The carers are very kind to me.” Staff treated people with dignity and respect, building positive relationships based on trust and understanding. This helped the people feel valued and comfortable while receiving care.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People’s care plans reflected their life history, preferences and daily support needs. Information included preferred routines and how people wished care to be provided. For example, staff recorded a person’s enjoyment of exercise and watching films in their first language.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were encouraged to make choices about their daily life and remain in control of how their care was provided. A person told us, “Depending on how I feel, I can change my care with the staff. If I want to stay in bed later, I just let them know.” Staff respected people’s decisions and adapted support to reflect their preferences.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. Staff responded to changes in people’s needs and adapted care to reflect individual circumstances. Care was flexible and provided in line with people’s preferences, this helped ensure people received timely support, reducing the risk of unmet needs and promoted positive outcomes.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The service provided regular supervision, training and opportunities for staff to reflect on practice. Staff told us they felt supported in their roles and were enabled to provide safe and person-centred care. A staff member said, “We have e-learning and face to face training. Our competencies are evaluated frequently. If I have any queries, I am comfortable toapproach my manager who is always willing to support me.”
