Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People’s care plans identified which aspects of their care the person could independently manage and when they required additional support from staff. People were supported to undertake activities which included staff supporting people to go out shopping. We observed people were supported in making choices about their daily lives and the care provided. The manager explained they supported people “to exercise a level of independence that may on the surface appear to have a level of risk.” This was done by assessing the person’s support needs to encourage independence, so they felt empowered to have “the ability to choose how they live their lives.”
