Date of assessment: 26 May 2026 to 9 June 2026. This was a planned comprehensive assessment. We undertook an unannounced visit to the service on 26 May 2026.
Rest Haven Residential Home is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to 34 people. The service provides support to older people, including people who are living with dementia. At the time of our assessment there were 34 people living at the service.
The provider promoted a positive safety culture, where incidents were appropriately reported, reviewed and used as learning opportunities. The service used an electronic care system that contained key information about people’s care needs, risk assessments and use of appropriate equipment to support people’s safety.
There were systems to ensure ongoing care continuity from admission and in the event of planned or unplanned hospital admissions. Safeguarding procedures were understood, and staff demonstrated an ability to support people safely. There were additional systems and processes to ensure people were safe and staff understood their safeguarding responsibilities.
Regular environmental checks were carried out to ensure the premises remained safe and well maintained. There were sufficient staff on duty to ensure people’s needs were met in a timely way. Staff competency was monitored through observation, supervision and appraisal. New staff received an induction and there was an ongoing training programme.
Infection prevention and control measures were well managed, and the environment was clean. Medication administration records reviewed during the assessment were fully completed, with no missing documentation, and stock levels were accurate.
There were appropriate systems and processes in place to ensure that people were only deprived of their liberty with the appropriate legal framework in place. Where required, the provider operated in accordance with The Mental Capacity Act 2005.
We observed people were treated with kindness and respect. Staff were observed providing supportive care that maintained people’s dignity. Relatives were welcomed and spoke positively of the service and the management team. People were encouraged to make choices and remain as independent as possible, moving freely around the home with support available when required.
People and their relatives were provided with appropriate information about the service and adjustments would be made where required to ensure information was available in an accessible format. There were systems and processes to seek the views of people and their relatives. Where required, end of life care was appropriately planned to ensure the service acted in accordance with people’s wishes and preferences.
There were effective governance arrangements. A regular auditing and quality assurance system was completed by the provider and registered manager. Some staff were involved in auditing and quality monitoring in their roles as ‘Champions’ in specific aspects of care delivery. There was a service improvement plan to promote continual development and improvement. The service had established excellent links with the local community to improve the quality of life for people living at the service.
