The feedback received about the service was positive.People told us the care and support provided had a positive effect on people and their relatives. Staff were praised for their professionalism, and kindness.

Relatives told us staff always interacted and had conversations with people and completed activities of the persons choice.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Care plans were personalised to people’s needs and preferences, and considered peoples’ cultural backgrounds, though some did not include any personal history about people. This was discussed with the registered manager during inspection, and they agreed to include an “About me” section to all care plans.

Relatives told us staff treat people as individuals, and staff knew people well enough to know their likes and dislikes. Staff learned about people’s backgrounds from building a relationship with them.

Staff were trained in Equality, diversity and inclusion and we saw an up-to-date policy for this.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Care plans did not provide details of what people were able to do for themselves. This meant staff did not have appropriate guidance to promote people’s independence. The registered manager told us this would be added to care plans going forward. Relatives told us staff always asked people what they would like to do and encouraged them to go out into the community.

Staff were aware of the importance of promoting independence and giving people choice and control to enhance their daily life.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

There was a small reliable team that ensured safety and responsiveness. Staff told us the registered manager was always available should they need extra support. We saw that staff had been trained in Positive Behavioural Support for people that needed it.

Staff knew how to recognise signs of pain or distress, and relatives told us,“Staff know [person] well enough to know when they are not their usual self, they tell us immediately and always record it in the notes.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff had access to an employee assistance programme via the HR system that was in use. This system also enabled staff to access offers and discounts for various shops, which staff were aware of.

The registered manager held regular team meetings to check in with staff and discuss any issues. Team meetings also gave staff the opportunity to discuss best practice and any changes to current guidance. Regular staff appraisals were also completed.
