During an assessment under our new approach
Date of inspection: 13 14 January 2026. The Gables is a residential home providing accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care for up to 61 people. At the time of our visit 43 people were using the service, this included 2 people on respite care. The service provides support to older and younger people and people living with dementia. It also provides support to people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments. This was the first inspection of the service. At the time of our visit there was no registered manager in post, the operations manager had recently been appointed to manage the service until a new registered manager was recruited. People’s needs were assessed prior to admission to the service, and care plans were reviewed regularly with individuals and relatives. People were supported to maintain their independence and staff ensured their dignity was maintained. We observed there were sufficient staffing levels to meet people’s needs. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. Accidents and incidents were investigated and shared with the staff team, and actions were taken to learn from these to reduce the risk of reoccurrence. Additional equipment and environment checks had been implemented following an incident at the service, staff told us these were providing further assurances. People were supported by staff who had received training and understood how to keep them safe and protect them from avoidable harm. People received their medicines as prescribed, and systems were in place for the safe management, supply and disposal of medicines. Leaders were open and honest and took action where improvements were needed with personalising some people’s clinical documentation, care planning and daily recording. Strengthening of oversight and governance was in place with the implementation of new auditing processes and targeted training courses for staff. Staff told us they felt valued, listened to and felt supported. The environment was safe, well maintained and staff understood the principles of maintaining good infection control. People had a variety of activities they could engage in, either within the service or through links with the local community.
