The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment, and wellbeing.

Staff supported people to exercise their right to independence, choice, and control at differing levels dependant on their healthcare and dependency needs and mental capacity. People were supported to understand their rights by using different communication techniques, and languages if required and their understanding was regularly reviewed. The systems enabled people to maintain important relationships, access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health, and wellbeing. People regularly accessed local shops and other amenities with staff support. A person told us, “I’ve been on a train and a bus today and had a massage. I chose how we were going to get there.” A relative said, “Staff support [Person using the service] to attend classes at the Macbeth Centre, e.g gardening, dance etc, which he really enjoys. These classes help him feel valued and socially included.”

Each person had their own weekly activities plan. During our visit people were involved in a number of activities away from Richford Gate. Activities included dance fitness, yoga, independent living and cooking, long walks and massage. One person was at work.
