Caring

Requires improvement

18 March 2025

Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has remained requires improvement. This meant people did not always feel well-supported, cared for or treated with dignity and respect.

This service scored 60 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 2

Staff did not always treat people with kindness, compassion and dignity. Five people completed a resident satisfaction survey in December 2024, 2 out of the 5 people felt they were not always treated respectfully, and not all staff were kind to them. We saw staff were not fully engaged with people when they were supporting them to eat their meals. For example, we saw a member of staff perched on the arm of the chair and talking with other staff whilst assisting 1 person. However, some relatives we spoke with were positive about the support their family member received, comments included, “The staff are very caring” and “The carers are always very helpful and look after my [family member]”.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 1

Staff did not always take account of people's preferences, choices, culture and protected characteristics. Staff did not always meet people’s wishes in relation to their personal care needs. One relative told us their family member preferred not to have male carers. However, there were occasions where 2 males provided personal care which their family member found very difficult.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff did not support people to integrate within the wider community to promote and support their independence, health and wellbeing. Some people were isolated in their rooms, only having engagement when staff were supporting them with their care needs or family and friends visited. There was limited evidence of staff offering one-to-one activity. One relative told us, “[Person’s name] feels very isolated, staff go into do care tasks, but no one goes in and sits with [Person’s name] for 10 minutes”. A new activity co-ordinator started to work for the service in December 2024, however, they only worked Monday to Friday and there were no activities planned for evenings and weekends.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

During our assessment we saw that staff responded to people’s needs in a timely manner. Staff recognised when people were showing signs of distress and provided appropriate support. However, we reviewed meeting minutes where some people had raised concerns about staff not responding to their needs.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

Staff spoke positively about working at the service. They told us they felt valued and listened to. One staff member said, “The clinical lead is great she really supports us all”. A staff member told us about a new incentive that had been introduced, they said, “We have a new scheme called employee of the month. We all vote for each other and the winner gets a certificate on the wall and a box of chocolates. This helps boost morale”.
