Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 15 May 2025 to 4 June 2025.
St Michaels is a care home providing support for up to 40 older people, some of whom live with dementia. At the time of the assessment there were 36 people living in the service.
Processes were in place to manage risks and keep people safe. Lessons were learned from accidents and incidents and used to improve people’s safety. There were enough trained and knowledgeable staff, who were recruited safely, to support people’s needs. People received their medicines as prescribed. However, recording of medicine stocks had not always been accurate. The registered manager took action to resolve the issue.
People’s needs were assessed and care plans guided staff about how to provide safe, person-centred care. Care plans were updated when people’s needs changed to ensure their care continued to be effective. However, relative’s views had not always been recorded when care decisions were made in people’s best interest. The registered manager took action to resolve the issue.
People’s rights were upheld and staff promoted people’s independence, choice and control. Staff understood people’s diverse needs and supported protected characteristics under the Equality Act, 2010.
There was an open and inclusive culture within the service. People, their relatives and staff felt able to speak up and were confident any issues they had would be quickly resolved. Systems were in place to monitor the quality and safety of the service. However, some audits had not been effective in identifying issues we found. The registered manager took action to improve the audit process.
People's experience of this service
People were consistently positive about their experience of care within the service. They told us they felt safe, the environment was clean and they were treated with respect. This was echoed by relatives, one of whom told us, “I couldn’t speak more highly of it and in fact if I ever get to that stage I would be happy to go there.”
People and their relatives said there were enough well trained and knowledgeable staff who understood their needs and preferences. They told us staff listened and acted quickly if they had any concerns.
