During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 19 October 2013, we observed staff communicating with people who lived at the service. Staff demonstrated that they were aware of each person's individual needs and provided support and guidance when required. We spoke to family members of three people who used the service, they said, 'We have no concerns, the staff are kind and caring and keep us informed.'

We looked at the records of the four people who used the service. We found that detailed information had been sought from each person; this was then used to develop individual person centred care guidelines.

The provider had safeguarding policies in place and staff had undergone recent safeguarding training. This ensured staff could recognise what could be classed as abusive behaviour and knew what actions to take if abuse was suspected.

We found that arrangements were in place for the safe management, storage and dispensing of medication. Staff had received training so people's safety was protected. Which ensured people's health and welfare was maintained and that people were protected from harm.

We found that staff were supported in training and supervision to deliver safe and effective care.

We reviewed the records that were stored in the service. The provider has a record keeping policy. We saw that records for each person were updated throughout the day. Staff records were secured in a locked cabinet and information that was stored electronically was password protected.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with all four people living at Mandalay, who told us that they were happy living there and that staff were nice and treated them well. People told us that they attended an adult learning college and a community centre where they took part in activities of their choice, including arts and crafts, sensory sessions, music, dance, drama, social skills and reading and writing.

Staff were professional in their approach, as well as friendly, caring and respectful of people's needs. Staff had a very good knowledge of the needs of the people using the service and responded promptly to people's requests for assistance.

A relative told us that, 'I am very happy and delighted with the service'. They told us that their relative always looked well cared for and that the staff were good at supporting them to have a healthy balanced diet.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we were able to hold a conversation with three people who use the service and to view another person's experience through our observations.

People with whom we spoke told us they were happy and liked where they were living. People told us that the care and support they received was good and that they liked the staff working within the service. They confirmed that they participated in sufficient leisure activities throughout the week, both during the day and at evenings and weekends.

People confirmed that they were treated well by support staff and that staff respected their privacy. People living in the home looked relaxed during the day of our visit. People told us that they felt safe and that, if they had any concerns or worries, they would discuss them with their relative or a member of staff.

Comments from one relative following their member of family's review confirmed that they were very happy with the care and support provided.
