Our view of the service

Hendon hospital offered a range of outpatient appointments covering multiple specialities which included but was not limited to; orthopaedics, gynaecology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology and physiotherapy. The outpatient’s department had 9 consulting rooms covering main outpatients, physiotherapy and the ophthalmology clinic. The outpatient’s department also had a plaster room, treatment room, phlebotomy room and onsite gym.

We last inspected outpatient services at Hendon Hospital on 19 to 21 July 2016, and we rated the outpatients service at this assessment as good overall.

We conducted this announced assessment on 16 to 17 June 2026 to follow up on the previous assessment. We visited the main outpatient’s department, the physiotherapy department and the ophthalmology clinic. We spoke with 18 members of staff, including housekeepers, administrative staff, healthcare assistants, trainee nurse assistants, nurses, doctors and senior leaders. We reviewed 6 care records and gained direct feedback from 6 patients and 3 of their family members.

We rated the service as good. There were enough staff to ensure people’s safety and meet their needs. The service controlled infection risks well. People’s care, support and treatment reflected their needs. People were treated with kindness, empathy and compassion. People and communities were at the centre of how care was planned and delivered, and patients told us they felt involved in decisions about their care and treatment. There was an inclusive and positive culture of continuous learning and improvement. The service had made improvements to confidentiality of patient records and infection, prevention and control, and is no longer in breach of regulation.
