At our last assessment we rated this key question outstanding. At this assessment the rating has changed to good.

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

People spoke highly of the staff who supported them. Comments included, “They are all excellent, so caring,” “They help me with washing and personal care. They are so kind and respectful.”

People felt that staff often went over and above their job role to help them. One person said, “They are kind and caring and sometimes go over and above what is required of them."

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Staff knew people extremely well and people had been able to form strong and trusting relationships with their small teams of staff. One person told us, “They feel more like family really.”

Detailed and individualised care plans gave staff all the information they needed to provide care and support in line with people’s preferences and wishes.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff supported people to remain as independent as possible in their own homes. One person said they felt the staff worked in partnership with them to make sure they had the care and support they wanted. They said, “It’s a partnership, we work together but I always feel that I am the one in charge. I get the final say."

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Staff were confident they would recognise any changes in people which could indicate they were unhappy or in discomfort. One member of staff said, “You know people so well, you always know when something isn’t right.”

People were confident staff would act to minimise any concerns. One person told us, “They keep an eye on everything. They know when something is wrong. They don’t miss a thing."

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff felt well supported by their colleagues and the management of the service. One member of staff said, “The support is unbelievable.” Another member of staff said, “Can’t fault the management, they are always there for you.”

The support provided to staff resulted in a very small turnover of staff which helped to ensure continuity for people who used the service.
