Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff supported people to exercise their right to independence, choice and control at differing levels dependant on their healthcare, and dependency needs and mental capacity. People were supported to understand their rights by using different communication techniques, and languages if required and their understanding was regularly reviewed. The provider systems supported people to maintain important relationships, access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health, and wellbeing. People regularly accessed local shops and other amenities with staff support. A person said, “They [staff] always help me to get what I need done.” A relative told us, “They [staff] always remind [loved one] of the choices available to her and help her to decide what she wants.”
