We looked for evidence that people were protected from abuse and avoidable harm.



At our last assessment we rated this key question Requires Improvement. At this assessment the rating has remained the same.



Requires improvement: This meant some aspects of the service were not always safe and there was limited assurance about safety. There was an increased risk that people could be harmed.



The service used systems and processes to prescribe, administer, record and store medicines. However, we identified some gaps in recording of controlled drugs and where staff had failed to action some medicines fridge temperatures that were outside of the recommended range. We also identified some out of date nutritional supplements that had not been removed from stock.



Wards were safe, reasonably clean, equipped, furnished, maintained and generally fit for purpose. However, there were areas that were in need of renovation and deep cleaning. Staff assessed and managed risks to patients and themselves well. Staff understood how to protect patients from abuse and the service worked well with other agencies to do so. The service managed patient safety incidents well.



The service was in breach of regulation 12 Safe Care and Treatment because of the ways patients’ medicines were managed.
