Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff spoke fondly of people who lived at the home. A staff member said, “We have wonderful residents. When they are happy, I am happy.”

People described staff as caring, kind and nice. People told us, “They are all very nice and check what you would like. They do anything they can to help” and “The general atmosphere is very kind, and I have never had any problems with the staff.” Another person said, “They knock on your door and ask to come in. The staff are so loving and there is not one I dislike.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. People's personal, cultural and religious needs were identified and respected. One person told us, “The [staff] are lovely and I know them very well and they know me, as I have been here for a while now. I am quite happy here.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and well-being. Some people told us they enjoyed spending time in the local community on their own. A range of activities was available within the home and people mostly told us they enjoyed these. One person told us how they helped out in the kitchen. However, opportunities to take part in activities based on people’s individual interests and hobbies were limited. We discussed this with the nominated individual who told us they would be developing the activity programme, including an additional activity coordinator.

People told us staff respected their choices and promoted their independence. A person told us, “I prefer to be independent, it’s best to do things for yourself. They know what I like. I don’t need much help. I can do a lot of things myself. I go and have my own shower, when I want to. They are happy for me to do that.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People told us staff provided assistance promptly and that call bells were usually answered in a timely manner.
