Treating people as individuals
The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met their needs and preferences. Care plans were person centred and focused on people’s strengths, abilities and aspirations. Staff worked well with people to understand their communication styles to support them to do activities they enjoyed and wanted to take part in. Staff knew people well and what activities they enjoyed taking part in each day. Where 2 people wanted to experience being able to surf, the registered manager contacted a specialist service who had adapted surf boards that could facilitate people with complex needs experience surfing. We saw photos in a book the registered manager had made for people’s families which showed how much they enjoyed this experience.
Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were empowered to live their best life by staff who understood their needs, preferences and aspirations. Staff supported people to do activities they enjoyed both at the service and in the community. A relative told us, “They go on holiday once a year and go out to places my loved one enjoys, such as the seafront and cafes.” The registered manager told us that people had individual holidays apart from a couple of people who enjoyed going together. They went on to say that people have different interests, so they plan their holidays on what they enjoy doing as individuals. One person likes Disney characters, so the service arranged a Disney cruise for them. To facilitate this the registered manager arranged for all the specialist equipment they needed such as adjustable beds and hoist to be ready and available on the cruise in an adaptive room. Where one person had an interest in festivals and 80’s music they arranged for them to experience this with staff.
People and their families were involved in how they wished to have their rooms decorated and how individual areas of the gardens were used to provide sensory stimulation from plants and flowers. Where people needed specialist equipment such as adapted wheelchairs, beanbags and hoists, this was all arranged through the input of occupational therapists and families. Technology was used by giving people access to individual applications on television or handheld devices they liked to watch. However, the registered manager informed us they had recently had an issue with internet connection and the provider needed to install a separate line so that people could regain access to the internet. It is important that the issue with the internet is addressed by the provider so that people continue to have choice over using this.
