Our view of the service
Date of assessment: The assessment was completed between 11 and 16 July 2025 with onsite activity on the 14 and 16 July.
Mellor House is a care home registered to accommodate up to eight people who have a learning disability who require nursing or personal care. The service does not provide nursing care. There were 8 people living at the service at the time of assessment. The accommodation for people was on the ground floor with access to a large garden and had easy access to the local community.
An assessment has been undertaken of a specialist service that is used by autistic people or people with a learning disability. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.
Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way which was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs. People were cared for safely by staff who had been recruited and employed after appropriate checks had been completed. Staff received the correct training to support people safely.
People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.
Care was person-centred and promoted people’s dignity, privacy and human rights. People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected their privacy and dignity, treated people as individuals and supported their preferences. Staff worked well with health care professionals to support people’s well-being. Staff supported people to engage in their local community with activities they enjoyed.
Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally.
People's experience of this service
Feedback we received on the service was very positive. Mellor House and the staff team were held in high regard from other healthcare professionals involved in people’s care. Relatives gave very positive feedback on the service being provided to their loved ones. One relative said, “[Person name] is happy there, staff look after them well and make sure they are alright. They cater for their every need.” A relative told us, “Staff always have time to listen to us.”
Relatives told us they were confident with the care provided by staff at Mellor House, that people had all their individual needs supported and staff knew their loved ones well.
We used a structured observation tool to assess whether people received good care. This approached showed people were supported with individual activities they enjoyed and that staff consistently interacted positively with people.
