Well-led – this means we looked for evidence that service leadership, management and governance assured high-quality, person-centred care; supported learning and innovation; and promoted an open, fair culture.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant the service was consistently managed and well-led. Leaders and the culture they created promoted high-quality, person-centred care.

Shared direction and culture

The provider had a shared vision, strategy and culture. This was based on equality and human rights, diversity and inclusion, engagement, and understanding challenges and the needs of people.

Staff and leaders demonstrated a culture of listening and respect that supported trust with people using the service and focused on learning and improvement. Managers took prompt remedial actions when things went wrong and ensured decisions and any measures adopted were clearly communicated to the staff team. They made sure to focus on people’s wellbeing and interests during any change process.

Relatives confirmed the service regularly sought their feedback on the care and service as a whole. A relative told us, “They do very well at The Meadow, it is an incredibly open and welcoming place.”

Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders

Leaders at all levels understood the context in which care and support were delivered and reflected the organisation’s values. They had the skills, knowledge, and experience to lead effectively and did so with integrity, openness, and honesty.

Managers were visible at the service, reachable and available to support and guide the staff team through challenges. They worked closely with people and knew their needs. They addressed concerns quickly by involving people and staff. A relative told us, “We had a Zoom Meeting yesterday with [manager]. They are all very accessible and available.”

Freedom to speak up

The provider fostered a positive culture where staff felt they could speak up and their voice would be heard.

Staff understood their responsibility and right to speak up, ensuring they could express their views and raise concerns about safety, care quality, and workplace issues. They told us managers encouraged them to speak up, they felt comfortable to express themselves and felt listened to. A staff member told us, “Whatever you raise, they will put themselves out to help you.”

Partnerships and communities

The service understood their duty to collaborate and work in partnership, so services worked seamlessly for people. They shared information and learning with partners and collaborated for improvement.

Staff escalated concerns promptly to external agencies when needed, which ensured people received the appropriate support at the right time. Staff maintained clear logs of interactions with health and social care professionals.

A visiting professional expressed overall positive views about the service. They said, “Staff ask for support when they need to. They are welcoming and supportive to professionals.”
