Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 24 June to 17 July 2025. Redcote House Residential Care Home is a residential home that supports older people, people under 65 and people living with dementia. The service can support up to 18 people. At the time we started our assessment, 13 people were living at the service. We identified 2 breaches of the legal regulations concerning, safe care and treatment and good governance. Medicines were used regularly for minimising people’s distress without recording appropriate processes to ensure they were used proportionately and as the last resort. Risk assessments were not carried out when risk had been identified and actions were not always taken following incidents to mitigate or minimise risk of reoccurrence. Essential information was not always included in care plans which put people at risk of unsafe support. Care plans did not consistently give guidance on how to support people in line with their assessed needs and were not always up to date with the most relevant information. People and their relatives were not always involved in reviews of their care plans to ensure care was being carried out in line with their preferences. Systems and processes to identify and report potential abuse were ineffective. Governance systems were not effective and did not record actions taken to improve the safety or quality of the service. There were enough trained staff to safely support people, however, staff were not always recruited safely. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded.

People's experience of this service

People’s relatives were mostly happy with the support their family members were receiving. Most relatives told us they thought their family members were safe and there were enough trained staff to meet their needs. A relative told us, “[Staff] do seem well trained. I cannot really criticise the day-to-day care.”

Relatives felt they could raise concerns but were not always sure they were addressed thoroughly and completely. Relatives told us they were not involved in their family member’s care plans with some relatives unsure if there were care plans in place. Some people could not directly tell us about their experiences. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. Observations evidenced people were treated with kindness and warmth by staff. People were generally positive about the choices offered at mealtimes and we observed people being supported in line with their assessed needs. Overall, our assessment found elements of care that did not meet the expected standards.
