Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

People with treated with dignity and respect. One person told us, “It is difficult to describe just how much kindness and caring the carers bring with them. They are always happy, smiling and really are a tonic. The respect and care is exceptional. Their respect and kindness is a gift.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People felt they were treated as individuals. People told us they received support which was specific to their care needs. One relative told us, “The carers wake my relative up sometimes because they like to sleep in and it makes their day seeing their happy faces. The carers are kind, gentle and respectful with them.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People were consulted about every aspect of the support provided. Staff understood the importance of ensuring people maintained their independence. One person told us, “The staff are very committed and professional you just have to see how they deliver the care.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Staff felt confident in responding to people’s changing needs to ensure their safety and wellbeing. Staff worked with leaders to ensure information was shared promptly to organise reviews, where needed. Without exception, staff felt leaders always listened to their views and staff felt confident leaders would act on feedback raised to them.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff felt valued by the provider and felt they made a difference every day. One member of staff told us, “I really like me job. I really make a difference to people’s lives.” The provider celebrated its diverse workforce and this ensured people received support from staff who understand their culture and background.
