Assessing needs

Score: 2

The provider had systems in place to assess people’s needs; however, they were not always robust and did not always ensure care plans and risk assessments were updated regularly. Although there were care plans and some risk assessments in place, they were not fully reflective of people’s needs. We identified a lack of information around health needs such as diabetes management. We found there was not always consistency with the information documented. Feedback was provided directly to the provider in relation to the lack of information identified. We found reviewing of information was not being completed on a regular basis.

Staff told us that they had access to care plans and risk assessments and felt they had enough information to support people at Grovelands Lodge. We found that staff knew people’s needs well.

Assessments were completed prior to support starting.

Monitoring and improving outcomes

Score: 3

During our on-site assessment we did not see evidence of Mental Capacity Assessments for one person whose care plan we reviewed. It was not always clear from the information in the care plan regarding capacity. Feedback was provided directly to the provider during our on-site visit. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) provides a legal framework for making decisions on behalf of people who may lack the capacity to do so for themselves. The Act requires that as far as possible; people make their own decisions and are helped to do so when needed. When they lack capacity, any decisions made on their behalf must be in their best interests and as least restrictive as possible. We spoke to the registered manager who has since provided supporting evidence around mental capacity assessments for the person.

The provider had processes in place for ensuring that Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard [DoLS] had been applied for appropriately and were monitored and reviewed. Staff had received training in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) and DoLS.
