Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
People’s views and decisions about care were incorporated within their care plans. This helped staff to support people in a way that allowed people to have control over their lives and make day-to-day decisions. People told us, “The carers give me choices” and “I am happy with the care. They [staff] respect me and listen to me. I have no problems or complaints. The carers are kind and caring.”
People’s independence was encouraged where possible and care plans reflected this. Staff told us, “I always give choices, and ask [people] what they would prefer. For one of my service users, I show them options and they will point to confirm their choice. I also ask them if they want to go to [location] as they enjoy going there, and they will use gestures and their [communication aid] to respond.”
Information about advocacy was available for people. Advocacy is a process for supporting people to express their views and concerns.
