During an assessment under our new approach
Assessment date: 12 and 13 February 2026. Adelphi Residential Care Home is a care home (without nursing) which supports older people.
The facilities and equipment did not meet people’s needs. Risks were not always managed or mitigated. Recruitment of staff was not always managed using safe processes. Medicines were not always managed well. People were protected and kept safe from the risk of abuse, however governance processes around monitoring Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards needed to be strengthened. However, the provider had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns. Managers investigated incidents.
Assessments of people’s needs were in place, but it was not clear how often they were reviewed. Care was based on latest evidence and good practice. People had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care for the best outcomes and smooth transitions when moving between services. Staff monitored people’s health to support healthy living. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent.
People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected people’s privacy and dignity. Staff treated people as individuals and supported their preferences. People had choice in their care and were encouraged to maintain relationships with family and friends. Staff responded to people in a timely way. The provider supported staff wellbeing.
People were involved in decisions about their care. Staff provided information people could understand. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the provider took it seriously and acted on it. The service was easy to access and worked to eliminate discrimination. People received fair and equal care and treatment. People were involved in planning their future care and understood options around choosing to withdraw or not receive care.
Leaders did have clear responsibilities and systems of accountability. Audits were not always effective and there was not always a focus on improving the facilities and premises. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. Managers worked with the local community to deliver the best possible care and were receptive to new ideas.
We found 2 breaches of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance.
We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
