All Inspections

During an assessment under our new approach

Date of Assessment: 17 and 18 February 2026. Ancasta Grove provides accommodation with nursing care for up to 75 people. Accommodation is arranged over 3 floors with stair and lift access. At the time of this inspection there were 65 people using the service. Our inspection was prompted by concerns received about how people’s needs were being met. This was a comprehensive inspection, and we reviewed all the quality statements. We found no concerns in relation to the care and support people received.

People’s needs had been fully assessed and were regularly reviewed. Risk assessments had been completed, and care plans informed staff how to keep people safe from harm. When people’s needs changed, care plans were updated to reflect this. Staff had the right skills, qualifications and experience to meet the needs of people and staff knew how to support people safely. Staff followed safeguarding processes, and systems were effective to manage any safeguarding concerns. Records showed people had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy.

Some improvements were needed in relation to medicines management, and some of the quality assurance processes. The management team were responsive to our feedback about this. Checks for safety had been carried out throughout the premises and for any equipment being used. Fire risks were assessed and managed. Quality assurance processes were in place to monitor all aspects of the service. Managers investigated incidents thoroughly and lessons learned were shared with staff. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care for the best outcomes and monitored people’s health to support healthy living. A team of health professionals told us, “Ancasta have been fantastic community partners.”

The service was clean and well maintained, and we observed staff following infection prevention and control guidelines. Staff told us the culture had changed and morale had improved with the new management team; they said they felt valued and respected and were encouraged and supported to develop professionally. They spoke positively about their roles, and the support and encouragement they received from the management team.

During a routine inspection

About the service

Ancasta Grove is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to younger adults and older people who may be living with dementia or a physical disability. At the time of this inspection, we had limited the number of people accommodated to 31 rooms on the ground floor. After this inspection found improvements had been made, we removed this condition of registration.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

People were safe and protected from avoidable harm and abuse. The provider supported people to keep themselves and their belongings safe and secure. The provider had processes to manage people’s medicines safely, and they had adapted their infection control measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

People had good outcomes. People’s feedback about the effectiveness of the service was consistently good.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

People were supported with kindness and compassion, and treated with dignity and respect. Staff supported people to take part in decisions about their care, with attention to people’s communication needs and any equality characteristics.

People's care plans were personalised and individual, setting out people's needs and choices and how they were to be met. Staff had a good understanding of people's needs and responded to them according to their care plans. Staff supported people to take part in social events and activities which were relevant to them.

The service was consistently well managed and led. The leadership and culture promoted high-quality, person-centred care. The provider could show clear improvements in how the service was managed.

Rating at last inspection:

We did not give an overall rating at the last inspection (published 31 May 2022). This was because it was a focused inspection which did not cover all 5 key areas.

Why we inspected

This inspection was prompted by a review of the information we held about this service.

We looked at infection prevention and control measures under the safe key question. We look at this in all care home inspections even if no concerns or risks have been identified. This is to provide assurance that the service can respond to COVID-19 and other infection outbreaks effectively.

Follow up

We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service, which will help inform when we next inspect.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

About the service

Ancasta Grove is a nursing home providing personal and nursing care to younger adults and older people who may be living with dementia or a physical disability. Accommodation is in a new, purpose-built facility on three floors. The service was registered on 25 May 2021 to accommodate up to 75 people. At the time of this inspection there were 21 people supported, all with rooms on the ground floor.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

People told us they felt safe, and staff took their safety and wellbeing seriously. We found concerns about fire safety in areas of the home that were not occupied at the time of the inspection. Other risks relating to the service and people’s individual risks were managed with a view to keeping people safe and protected from harm, including their human rights. The provider put learning in place when things went wrong. There were processes to manage people’s medicines safely and protect them from the spread of infection, including COVID-19.

There had been a period of inconsistent leadership in the home during which the provider had not always met the fundamental standards of care. There had been some recent improvements, and staff morale was positive. People we spoke with were positive about the service and said they would recommend it. There were examples of good outcomes for people.

Rating at last inspection

This service was registered with us on 25 May 2021 and this is the first inspection.

Why we inspected

We received concerns in relation to safe management and administration of medicines. As a result, we undertook a focused inspection to review the key questions of safe and well-led only.

We found no evidence during this inspection that people were at risk of harm from these concerns.

However we found evidence the provider needs to make improvements in other areas of safe and well-led. Please see the safe and well-led sections of this full report.

Enforcement

We are mindful of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our regulatory function. This meant we took account of the exceptional circumstances arising as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic when considering what enforcement action was necessary and proportionate to keep people safe as a result of this inspection. We will continue to monitor the service.

We have identified a breach of regulation in relation to safe care and treatment.

Full information about CQC’s regulatory response to the more serious concerns found during inspections is added to reports after any representations and appeals have been concluded.

Follow up

We will request an action plan for the provider to understand what they will do to improve the standards of quality and safety. We will work alongside the provider and local authority to monitor progress. We will return to visit as per our re-inspection programme. If we receive any concerning information we may inspect sooner.
